[German only] The end of the blockade - Agreement between government and opposition parties in Cambodia could contribute to democratisation
Standpunkte 18/2014 by Manuel Palz
A good year after the fifth elections to the National Assembly, Cambodia's political deadlock ended. For almost a year, the opposition party, the Party for the Rescue of the Cambodian Nation (PRKN), had refused to recognise the results of the last parliamentary election (July 2013) and to start its work in the National Assembly. Surprisingly, the government around Prime Minister Hun Sen (Cambodian People's Party, KVP) and the opposition have now found a compromise. An important part of this was the agreement on a reform of the national election commission. Should Hun Sens succeed in his experiment to dare "more democracy", people in Cambodia could hope for a better future. But the road still seems long.
